The United Nations Oceans Conference will take place in Lisbon, between June 27th and July 1st, and will be co-chaired by Portugal and Kenya, and you can consult the program at https://www.un.org/en/conferences/ocean2022. A consensus is sought from Governments in approving the Lisbon Declaration, which highlights innovative and science-based areas of action that allow supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 14 of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, which consists of conserving and using oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
As one of its objectives is also to enhance the interconnections between this SDG 14 and other Objectives for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, the High-Level Symposium on Water will be held in parallel on the 27th of June , at the Altice Arena. In this symposium, which will be one of the preparatory meetings for the UN Conference on Water 2023, the interconnections between Sustainable Development Goals 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and 14 (Life Below Water) will be explored, constituting an extraordinary opportunity to bring together political leaders and high-level decision makers who deal with “fresh” and “salt” water, reflecting on how to better link these two communities to ensure an integrated view of the water cycle.
This Symposium is composed of three round tables:
Table 1: Synergies between SDG6 and SDG14: an integrated view of the entire hydrological cycle: strengthening intersectoral approaches to accelerate the implementation of related goals, including financing and governance;
Table 2: Water and sanitation services linking SDG6 and SDG14;
Table 3: Existing successful and innovative partnerships to support the implementation of SDG6 and 14: challenges, opportunities and actions.
LIS-Water supports the Portuguese Government in organizing this third round table. We will describe the contents of these three tables in due course.
You can consult the Symposium website at: https://hlswater.sgambiente.gov.pt/ or through the UNOC website, at: https://www.un.org/en/conferences/ocean2022/events/special.
Bear in mind that the United Nations, through its UN Web TV channel, will broadcast live this High Level Symposium on Water, at the link: https://media.un.org/en/asset/k1q/k1qpyfofnv, allowing you to follow the Symposium work live.
