Portugal currently has 431 blue flags, 32 more than in 2021.
The European Blue Flag Association, which celebrates 35 years of activity, announced that 393 beaches, 18 marinas and 20 ecotourism vessels were awarded. The distinguished coastal and river beaches are distributed throughout the territory, in the North (82), Center (50), Tagus (77), Alentejo (40), Algarve (86), Azores (42) and Madeira (16) . The continuous growth in the number of river beaches is highlighted.
The number of blue flags for coastal and river bathing waters is an excellent indicator for assessing the impact of sanitation services on the environment, as these waters are affected by pollution from wastewater discharge.
Around 700 million m3 of wastewater generated by the population and also by some contribution from rainfall are released annually into the receiving means.
The fact that Portugal has 85% of the population with wastewater service through fixed networks, and especially that it treats practically all of that wastewater, greatly contributes to this success, which is so important for public health, the environment and the economy. , namely tourism.
