Water issues from a consumer perspective

The interview dealt with topics as diverse as drought, water management, reuse, desalination, rehabilitation of infrastructures, tariffs and their spread across the territory, as well as social tariffs. It is part of one of the strategic objectives of LIS-Water, which is to contribute to a society that is more informed and aware of water issues and to support its more active and effective intervention in the discussion and resolution of these problems.

It refers that we are reusing only 1 to 2% of the wastewater we produce. We can increase this amount to 10% to 20%. Countries like Israel and even Spain are already far above, given the special difficulties of water scarcity that they have. There is a significant potential for development in Portugal and this orientation is foreseen in the next Strategic Plan for Water Supply and Management of Waste and Rainwater (PENSAARP 2030), with recent legislation already existing on this matter.

He warns that the Strategic Plan foresees a global investment of 5.5 billion euros for the next decade, half of which are to rehabilitate infrastructure. If we don’t pay enough attention to rehabilitation, we make a mistake. We have to renew the infrastructures at a pace that guarantees that they are always kept in good condition. If we annually renew 1%, in 100 years we will have a renewed network. If we annually renew 2%, in 50 years we will have a renewed network. Infrastructure lasts between 50 and 100 years, so a 1% to 2% renewal policy ensures that the supply system is always in good condition. If this policy is not in place, as has been the case, increasing problems arise, including significant water losses.
