LIS-Water presents RegWAS LAC 2.0 Program in Workshop on solid waste, water and sanitation management

With the aim of exchanging experiences on solid waste management, water and sanitation and related topics, a workshop was held between international institutions and institutions of the State of Guatemala, to strengthen the capacities of work teams and seek to establish synergies that can meet the treatment adequate disposal of solid waste in the country’s 340 municipalities.

Julio Aguilera, Regulatory Specialist Consultant at LIS-Water, presented the RegWAS LAC 2.0 Program to support the strengthening of water and sanitation regulators in Latin America and the Caribbean. LIS-Water shared the presentation space with ADERASA through SUNASS, which holds the presidency of the institution, represented by Ximena Quiroz, who had the opportunity to present ADERASA’s participation in the first phase of the RegWAS LAC Program (2020- 2023).

The workshop was attended by the Municipal Development Institute -INFOM-, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources -MARN-, the Guatemala Drinking Water and Sanitation Network -RASGUA-, the Global Partnership for Water Guatemala -GWP- and from Helvetas Guatemala, institutions that are actively working on the issue of water and sanitation, as well as solid waste management.

Martin del Castillo, from Helvetas, explained the results of a survey carried out by the Inter-American Development Bank, which focused on solid waste management in 8 Latin American countries, including Guatemala. The study made a comparison between solid waste management processes in rural and urban areas. Research has shown that the variation in solid waste management between these areas presents a considerable gap, but overall, management in Guatemala presents an enormous challenge.

During the workshop, the challenges of sustainable solid waste management were also discussed, among which stand out well-defined legislation, the identification of the roles of the central government and local governments, the importance of strengthening the capabilities of technical teams, the importance citizen participation in the process, among others.

In turn, Dr. Karin Slowing Umaña, president of the INFOM Board of Directors, indicated that this activity was carried out at INFOM, with the aim of this institution once again assuming leadership in the country in water and sanitation issues. Likewise, the institution has the mandate to expand its field of action to the issue of solid waste management.

On the other hand, added Dr. Slowing Umaña, INFOM is increasing its abilities also for the integrated management of water resources; in other words, it will not only focus on drilling wells and capturing water sources by gravity to bring piped water to communities and populations, but will also seek to undertake actions that contribute to the maintenance of aquifers and river basins, to protect water resources and the entire urban water cycle to guarantee water for future generations.
